FilmGate Miami is a nonprofit organization based in Miami, Florida, that supports the regional film and new-media ecosystem in the Southeast United States. It began in 2012 as FilmGate Interactive, expanding Florida’s screen culture to include programs that build acting, filmmaking, and related media skills. That year it launched the FilmGate Interactive Festival, Florida’s first event to unite storytelling with contemporary technology, and secured a Knight Arts Challenge grant of $100,000 to establish the festival. From 2017 onward, the organization expanded its infrastructure by creating The Downtown Media Center in partnership with Heiga Studios, a shared hub offering affordable programs, resources, and space for local film businesses and creatives. In 2018, the program was welcomed to Silverspot Cinema in Downtown Miami. The organization has received support from the Knight Foundation, the Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority, and Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs, and in 2023 partnered with the University of Miami to mark the festival’s tenth anniversary, showcasing projects from Florida and beyond.
