In 1891, Miss Fannie Battle, a teacher and social worker, saw a need in her Nashville community and responded. She noticed children being left alone to fend for themselves while their parents worked, so she rented a room in East Nashville and began clothing, teaching, and feeding the most vulnerable children in our city. Her legacy paved the way for what today is known as Fannie Battle Day Home, one of the oldest affordable childcare providers in the world. Nearly 135 years after Miss Fannie Battle rented a room, Fannie Battle Day Home, still located in East Nashville, continues to provides nurturing, high-quality, affordable childcare to Nashville's families. Open for 55 hours a week, we not only provide excellent academic education but we also serve 79,000 meals a year to the children in our care. We develop young thinkers for academic and social-emotional success in Kindergarten through Conscious Discipline and Frog Street Curriculum, and we empower families through our Family Empowerment Program and Women's Circle. Moreover, we endeavor to continue to strengthen the Nashville community and celebrate our history through our beloved 109 year-old Caroling for Kids initiative every December.
