The East Asian Observatory (EAO) is a nonprofit organization formed to pursue joint astronomical projects within the East Asian region. It operates to build and manage facilities that complement existing and planned regional observatories, leveraging shared funding, technical expertise, and manpower to remain internationally competitive in very large scale astronomical instruments. The EAO aims to raise resources and establish a dedicated observatory staff distinct from its partner institutions, with governance and oversight provided by the East Asian Core Observatories Association (EACOA) institutes, while ensuring partner communities have access to its facilities. Its early responsibilities included assuming operation of the James Clerk Maxwell Submillimetre Telescope on Maunakea, Hawaii, and it provides engineering and IT support to the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope under an agreement with the University of Arizona. Based in Hilo, Hawaii, the organization operates within the research services sector and serves regional academic and scientific communities engaged in astronomy.
