The DC Youth Orchestra Program (DCYOP) is a Washington, DC-based organization in the music education field, described as the region’s leading ensemble-based program. Its mission focuses on providing high-quality instruction and performance opportunities for youth across the DC metropolitan area's diverse communities, developing a Youth Orchestra capable of competing nationally and internationally, and fostering the discipline and focus needed for success in academics as well as music. DCYOP serves about 700 students aged 4 1/2 to 18 with group lessons and ensemble training on all orchestral instruments, and expands access through tuition assistance and on-site satellite programs at DC Title I schools. Founded in 1960 by Lyn McLain, the program has milestones such as the first youth orchestra to perform at the Kennedy Center, has toured 22 countries, and has worked with renowned musicians including Copland, Maazel, Rostropovich, Dudamel, Bell, and Yo-Yo Ma, in addition to performing for U.S. presidents and diplomats.
