The Council for Aid to Education is a nonprofit focused on higher education, based in New York City. It designs performance-based assessments intended to measure and guide instruction of higher-order skills across subject areas. Over the past two decades, CAE has helped more than 825,000 students worldwide improve proficiency in critical thinking, problem solving and effective written communication. The organization's approach relies on practices in assessment development, administration and psychometrics, with examples including the CLA+ and CCRA+. CAE serves secondary and higher education students and the institutions that support their learning, providing tools to assess and develop critical academic and career skills. In March 2026, CAE announced an expanded partnership with the Institute for Self-Directed Learning, reflecting ongoing collaborations to design learner-centered educational environments.
