Colleges of Distinction is a national college guide that helps students connect with colleges and information aimed at preparing them for successful careers, active citizenship, and lifelong learning. It centers its evaluation on four distinctions—Engagement, Teaching, Community, and Outcomes—spotlighting hundreds of smaller, teaching-centered colleges rather than the wealth or fame of larger institutions. Founded by concerned parents and admissions professionals, the organization is based in Austin, Texas, and serves prospective students and their families seeking campuses with meaningful student involvement and strong teaching. In the higher education landscape, it positions itself as an alternative to traditional prestige rankings by focusing on engaged students, strong teaching, a vibrant campus community, and demonstrable outcomes. The guide curates a nationwide set of colleges that align with a learner-centered approach rather than campus size or notoriety. A notable development occurred in 2024 when Oberlin College joined its network, signaling ongoing expansion of its partner institutions.
