The company traces its origins to Enzyme Technologies in 1979 and adopted the Clinical Reference Laboratory name in 1983 as it began offering commercial lab testing; it is based in Overland Park, Kansas. It is described as one of the largest privately held clinical testing laboratories in the United States. It has pursued innovations including saliva-based COVID-19 testing, for which it received FDA Emergency Use Authorization for its rapid test in 2020.
