The City of Sacramento is a municipal government in California, founded in 1849 as the oldest incorporated city in the state. It operates under a City Charter and a City Council–Manager form of government adopted in 1920, with a Mayor and eight district-based Council members who serve four-year terms in staggered elections. The City Council sets policy, regulates land use, approves the annual budget and contracts, and appoints four city officers including the City Manager, City Attorney, City Treasurer, and City Clerk.

City Hall, at 915 I Street in Sacramento, California, hosts public Council meetings on most Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., with agendas available through the City Clerk’s Office. The Council also runs several committees focused on transportation and community development, law and legislation, and personnel and public employees. A notable 2024 development involved a collaboration with Sacramento Republic FC and Downtown Railyard Venture to plan a new soccer stadium and live entertainment venue in The Railyards as part of downtown revitalization efforts.
