The City of Huntington Beach is a municipal government based in Huntington Beach, California, serving northwestern Orange County along the Pacific coast. It covers 28 square miles of land and 26 square miles of water, with more than eight miles of uninterrupted beach and a population near 200,000 residents. Founded in the late 1880s and incorporated as a charter city in 1909, the city operates under a City Council/City Manager framework with seven at-large, non-partisan council members and a rotating mayor. The city is organized into 11 major departments, including Administrative Services, City Attorney, City Clerk, City Manager, City Treasurer, Community Development, Community & Library Services, Finance, Fire, Police, and Public Works. It maintains a sizable municipal workforce to deliver services spanning public safety, infrastructure, and community programs for residents and visitors. In 2026, Huntington Beach announced a partnership with Golden West College to launch a noncredit Ocean Lifeguarding Academy in spring 2026, developed with the Huntington Beach Fire Department.
