The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is a United States government agency in the International Affairs sector, headquartered in Washington, District of Columbia 20505, United States. The CIA was created in 1947 by the National Security Act, which also established the Director of Central Intelligence to lead the U.S. intelligence community and serve as head of the CIA. The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 amended the National Security Act to create the Director of National Intelligence, who would assume some roles previously fulfilled by the DCI, with a separate Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
