The Center for Contemporary Arts is a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Abilene, Texas, founded in 1989. It operates five galleries, including a photography-focused space, and presents more than 20 admission-free exhibits featuring regional art, international photography, and short films, complemented by community education programs that reach over 26,000 people annually. It supports a community of artists through more than 60 member artists and ten rental studios, underscoring its role as both exhibition venue and creative workspace.
Positioned in the museums, historical sites, and zoos sector, it prioritizes free access to its exhibits to engage a diverse cross-section of residents. In early 2020, the organization announced the departure of its director, marking a governance transition while continuing its mission to encourage, empower and inspire through the arts.
