Based in Sacramento, California, the California Fire Chiefs Association operates as a professional body within the public safety sector. Originating in 1897 as the California Fire Chiefs Club, it has evolved into a statewide association that represents more than 650 fire chiefs from nearly 1,000 emergency services agencies and about 1,500 section members. The organization carries out its work through eight specialized sections—Fire Operations, Fire Prevention, Training, Emergency Management, Administrative Support Services, Communications, Fire Mechanics, and Emergency Medical Services—and maintains a Legislative Division with a substantial taskforce to address policy issues. 
 
 It focuses on advancing the fire service profession and representing the diverse interests of its membership, while strengthening relationships among chiefs across the state to provide mutual support. It engages with key legislation affecting fire services and aims to foster collaboration within the broader fire service community. In July 2025, Steve Akre of the Sonoma Valley Fire District was named president-elect for the 2025–2026 term.
