Brothers on the Rise (BOTR) is a wellness and fitness services organization based in Oakland, California, that addresses challenges disproportionately affecting low-income male youth of color, including exposure to violence, high school dropout, unemployment, incarceration, and death by homicide. The organization directly serves more than 100 youth annually in Oakland public schools and parks and extends its impact through training and technical assistance to Bay Area schools and agencies. BOTR pursues a dual direct-service and systems-change model, with core programs such as Brothers, UNITE! for 4th-8th graders and Lift a Brother Up for 9th-12th graders, providing literacy, life skills, leadership development and paid internships. In addition, Trail Brothers environmental education and Brothers Helping Brothers counseling, case management and parent engagement expand the support network, while BOTR offers workshops, curricula, coaching, consultation, convening, research and writing for youth-serving professionals.
