The Borough of North East is a municipal government in Erie County, Pennsylvania, covering about 1.3 square miles and located roughly 15 miles northeast of Erie, near the New York-Pennsylvania border. As of the 2000 census, about 4,600 residents lived in the borough, which is governed by a borough manager and a six-member council operating under a weak-mayor, strong-council system, with contracted services provided by a solicitor, an engineer, and other associations. The borough maintains more than 2,000 acres of woodland and other properties within its borders and oversees a multi-million-dollar budget. In December 2021, the North East Borough Wastewater Department was recognized as Wastewater System of the Year by the Pennsylvania Rural Water Association.
