Boliden Somincor operates an underground mine in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, producing copper, zinc, lead and silver. The processing plant consists of two separate concentrators, one dedicated to copper and the other to zinc. The Somincor deposit is part of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, discovered in 1977 with mining starting in 1988 and copper production beginning in 1989. Today the operation is highly automated and employs multiple mining methods, and it benefits from strong transport links, including the national road network, its own rail connection, and access to the Port of Setúbal.
