En marzo de 1989 BinterCanarias comienza sus operaciones en el archipiélago canario. En ese momento la flota con la que contó la compañía estaba compuesta por cuatro aviones CN-235.

Los primeros vuelos se realizaron entre Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma y Fuerteventura, islas a las que posteriormente se unieron Lanzarote y El Hierro. Tras la inauguración del Aeropuerto de La Gomera (julio de 1999) BinterCanarias también abrió una ruta con esa isla.

En esta primera etapa de la aerolínea, el objetivo inmediato era el de garantizar un mayor número de frecuencias entre las islas, al tiempo que ya se planteaba por parte de los responsables de la compañía la implantación de procedimientos que tendieran a agilizar toda la operativa.

BinterCanarias nació como compañía aérea regional, y en ese sentido es la única que opera actualmente en los ocho aeropuertos de Canarias. Desde el año 2005 inició un proceso de internacionalización que se traduce, en estos momentos, en sus conexiones con Marrakech, El Aaiún y Madeira, a las que recientemente se han unido cuatro nuevos destinos: Casablanca, Agadir, Cabo Verde y Lisboa. Y a partir de enero también conectará con Banjul.
