Insights

Billing Modernization BTC has engaged Amdocs to modernize its convergent charging and billing platform, signaling a strong appetite for OSS/BSS upgrades. This creates opportunities to cross-sell complementary solutions such as customer experience analytics, revenue assurance, fraud management, and managed cloud-based billing services.

Digital Transformation As a government-owned parastatal operating in a liberalising market with value-added services, BTC is positioned to invest in digital transformation, cloud, cybersecurity, and IoT/M2M solutions for both core telco and enterprise customers. Their tech stack (Oracle, VMware, Tableau) and ongoing modernization efforts suggest a readiness to adopt integrated analytics, data platforms, and managed services.

Sponsorship Activation BTC's active sponsorships and event participation (World Athletics Relays, WTISD) indicate a channel for sponsored tech activation, mobile payments, and fan engagement platforms. This opens sales opportunities for event apps, digital marketing analytics, loyalty programs, and secure payment solutions tailored for large-scale events.

Innovation Partnerships BTC's involvement in the SmartHive XG project, which earned a Best Project Award, points to openness to advanced digital services such as IoT, edge computing, and AI-enabled telecom solutions. Opportunities exist to offer IoT platforms, edge analytics, and partner-led innovation programs that align with BTC's modernization trajectory.

Governance Procurement Recent leadership changes (interim chair, interim CFO, new CEO) typically precede procurement cycles and governance over large technology programs. This suggests timing for introductions of vendor governance services, program management, and cost-effective IT infrastructure solutions that fit a fiscally cautious, government-owned operator profile.

Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) is a state-owned telecommunications operator in Botswana, established in 1980 to provide and manage the country’s national and international communications services. The Botswana government holds 100% equity in the company. In 1996, the BTC Act liberalized the market by ending BTC’s monopoly and introducing indirect competition through two cellular joint ventures, Mascom Wireless and Vista Communications (now Orange); the act also created a regulatory framework that encouraged competition in customer premises equipment and value-added services.

Recent developments include modernization efforts such as a 2025 agreement with Amdocs to upgrade BTC’s convergent charging and billing platform. The year also saw leadership changes, with Thato Kewakae named interim board chair in September 2025 and Jurgen Peschel appointed as CEO in June 2025. BTC participates in industry events in Botswana, including World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, and undertakes related activity within the sector.
