Barter Theatre is a nonprofit performing arts organization based in Abingdon, Virginia, founded in 1933 by Robert Porterfield. With two stages and in-house costume, scene, and prop shops, it produces many elements of its shows on site. The company maintains a resident acting troupe drawn from across the United States and programs a substantial annual audience of more than 160,000 patrons. The theatre also operates the Barter Players, a non-equity group that creates productions for children and tours schools nationwide. In January 2026, Barter Theatre appointed Sarah Van Deusen as Artistic Director for the Barter Players.
