Bard Graduate Center is a graduate research institute in New York City offering MA and PhD degrees in Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture. It studies the human past through material traces, examining both aesthetically oriented objects and ordinary items. The center employs interdisciplinary approaches drawn from art and design history, economic and cultural history, philosophy, anthropology, and archaeology in its teaching and research. Its campus comprises a programs building and library at 38 West 86th Street, a Gallery at 18 West 86th Street, and a residence hall at 410 West 58th Street. Founded in 1993 by Dr. Susan Weber, Bard Graduate Center operates as an academic unit of Bard College, is accredited, and a member of the Association of Research Institutes in Art History (ARIAH). Over the past 25 years, it has graduated more than 400 alumni who have pursued careers in academia, museums, and the private sector.
