The Barbershop Harmony Society is a leading organization in close-harmony a cappella singing. It coordinates more than 1,200 quartets and about 700 choruses, with roughly 14,000 members in North America and allied groups in over a dozen countries, bringing total active singers to more than 70,000. Through programs in music education, publishing, performance, and outreach, it preserves and expands an American close-harmony tradition rooted in late-19th-century African-American communities in the South; the organization is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and was founded in 1938 as the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. It serves singers of all ages and maintains a network of quartets, choruses, and allied organizations across its global reach. In May 2026, the Society participated in NAfME Hill Day to advocate for federal music education programs, illustrating active engagement with music-education policy.
