The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) is a government agency that provides reliable information and statistics on Australia’s health and welfare to support informed policy and public understanding. An independent corporate Commonwealth entity established in 1987, AIHW is governed by a management board and is accountable to Parliament through the Health portfolio. Based in Canberra, it employs hundreds of staff and collects and reports data on topics ranging from health expenditure and hospitals to ageing, homelessness, disability, mental health, and child protection. Through its analyses, AIHW supports policy discussions and decisions affecting health, housing, and community services. In May 2026, AIHW partnered with Breast Cancer Network Australia to advance national accountability and embed cancer data initiatives into Australia’s National Cancer Data Framework. Its data products and reports contribute to national understanding of health and welfare trends and support public health surveillance and policy analysis.
