The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is Australia’s official statistical agency within government administration, based in Belconnen, Australian Capital Territory. It traces its origins to 1905, when it was established as the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics to provide objective data for nation-building. The ABS produces and disseminates statistics across social, economic, population, labour, industry, and environment domains, supported by services that cover statistical methods, data and metadata management, information technology, client management, dissemination, and human resources. It also coordinates statistical activities with other official bodies both within Australia and internationally. The ABS serves government agencies, researchers, and other stakeholders by providing authoritative statistics that inform policy, planning, and public understanding. Recent developments include a memorandum of understanding with the Papua New Guinea National Statistical Office establishing a framework for continued cooperation through 30 June 2028, work on Great Barrier Reef Ecosystem Accounts with the DCCEEW, and a partnership with Services Australia to broaden survey access via myGov.
