Established in 1962, the Association of Children's Museums functions as a professional body serving children's museums around the world. It gathers more than 470 member museums across 50 states and 16 countries, and it advocates for the sector and the people who operate and sustain it. Based in Arlington, Virginia, the organization advances knowledge sharing and collaboration through convenings and dissemination of information within the broader Museums, Historical Sites, and Zoos industry. In May 2026, ACM elected Beth Shea, executive director of the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge, to its board of directors. The association has also engaged in industry events, such as participating in the Museums InterActivity Conference in 2025, reflecting ongoing efforts to connect practitioners and share best practices.
