Assembly for Action (2018-2020) was an annual, student-run initiative in Gainesville, FL that invested nearly $30,000 into 12 student-led community service projects with local nonprofits. Each year, 50 university students participated in a Day of Service with over 10 local nonprofit partners. Over the two-weekend conference experience, these Action Scholars learned about community development and nonprofit management through seminars and workshops from nearly 15 faculty and community leaders. The conference culminated in a grant-writing competition where Scholars worked in teams to write capacity-building grant proposals that would amplify their nonprofit partners’ efforts through student engagement. Over the next year, grant-winning Action Plans were implemented by the authoring Scholars alongside their nonprofit partners. This innovative university-community initiative was the result of a collaborative effort with various student organizations, University of Florida departments, the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, and numerous nonprofit organizations across Gainesville, FL.
