The American Philosophical Society is a United States–based learned society and library organization founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin and fellow scholars, making it the nation's oldest learned society. It operates in the libraries industry and has 51-200 employees. The Society's Library houses research materials in early American history, history of medicine, science and technology, and Native American studies, ethno-history and linguistics. The APS supports a grants, fellowships and research division; maintains a museum on Independence Mall; runs a scholarly publications division; and conducts programs of member meetings rooted in Franklin's vision. Recent developments include the appointment of Patrick Spero as CEO in 2024 and the launch of the APS-NEH Sabbatical Fellowship in 2022.
