The American Ethical Union is a federation within the Religious Institutions sector that advocates for ethical humanist communities. It supports groups focused on ethics, social justice, and compassionate civic life, emphasizing deed over creed and partnerships that empower individuals through service and activism. Based in New York, the organization serves a network of Ethical Societies across the United States, aiming to foster a world that values every person and promotes reason, compassion, and rational thinking.

With a focus on building ethical relationships and sustainable, democratic communities, the AEU positions itself as a non-theistic or humanist movement within the broader religious landscape. It seeks to connect diverse leaders—ethics-focused communities, ministers from related traditions, and humanists—through collaborations that advance social justice and public engagement. A recent partnership with the Center for Common Ground reflects its involvement in national initiatives, while its expansion into individual membership signals an effort to broaden member participation and stewardship of its mission.
