The American Battle Monuments Commission is a U.S. government agency that administers, operates, and maintains a network of memorial sites both in the United States and abroad. It oversees 26 permanent American military cemeteries and 31 federal memorials located in 17 foreign countries, plus territories including the Northern Mariana Islands and Gibraltar, with three memorials situated in the United States. These sites largely honor American service members from World War I and World War II and are kept as meticulously maintained shrines. The agency is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, and maintains an Overseas Operations Office in Paris, employing a few hundred staff across domestic and overseas postings. ABMC hires both U.S. citizens and non-citizens, with domestic roles focused on cemetery administration and on-site operations and overseas roles spanning information technology, human resources, public affairs, engineering, finance, and administrative support. A recent development noted publicly is a partnership with Progressive Technology Federal Systems, Inc. to transition ABMC’s records to electronic systems, signaling a modernization of its records management.
