The Association of Independents in Radio (AIR) operates as a collaborative hub for independent audio and video creators, focusing on identifying, cultivating, and connecting storytellers across the United States and globally. Founded in 1988 by freelance radio producers in New York City, AIR seeks to expand the ecosystem in which independent creators can do their best work, advocate for their needs, and build sustainable careers. The organization runs a small, largely remote staff led by CEO Ken Ikeda and governed by a board, based in New York City. AIR’s network includes more than 1,300 independent audio producers, multimedia journalists, and public media stations and networks across 47 states and 30 countries, with members ranging from journalists and podcasters to engineers and creative media entrepreneurs. It connects independent creators with public media and other networks, facilitating collaboration and professional opportunities within the online audio and video space. In December 2025, AIR announced a five-year partnership with the Ford Foundation to strengthen support for independent audio creators.
