As the state's affiliate of the national ACLU, it pursues litigation, policy advocacy, communications, and organizing to defend individual rights and liberties. Its work spans privacy and reproductive rights, voting rights, criminal-legal reform, and protections for 2S-LGBTQIA people, with emphasis on Indigenous Justice and the decriminalization of poverty. It is described as Montana's largest civil rights organization, operating with staff across the state. In April 2025, it filed suit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on behalf of two Montana State University students whose visas were revoked, seeking an injunction to halt the department's actions.
