ACIL is a trade association that represents independent, commercial laboratories in the scientific testing and related services space. Its members include professional services firms engaged in testing, product certification, consulting, and research and development, with affiliated membership available to manufacturers’ laboratories, consultants, and suppliers to the industry. The association defines independent laboratories as commercial entities providing analysis, testing, inspection, materials engineering, sampling, product certification, and related consulting services for the public, operating independently from institutions or trade groups that could affect objectivity. Headquartered in Washington, DC, ACIL traces its origins to 1937, when it was founded as the American Council of Commercial Laboratories and later incorporated in New York as the American Council of Independent Laboratories. In November 2024 ACIL announced a collaboration with AOAC International to develop harmonized quality initiatives that aim to improve public health and safety. The organization operates within the professional training and coaching industry as a member-driven association supporting independent laboratories.
